There is nothing like the sun shining it's radiance on you, feet dipped in the clear blue water and watching your kiddos play, live and breathe for long summertime pool days. We live at the pool during the summer and the tan lines are prominent! One child tans better than me, obviously she possess the Spanish genes, and the other...well, let's just say he matches the color of a tomato five minutes in the sun. My eldest with his sparking blue eyes and Irish skin from his daddy, has always had sensitive skin. Even when he was an infant and toddler this poor boy would break out in hives and rashes when any sunscreen would come into contact with his fair skin.
A part of me, honestly thought he would grow out of it--this sensitive skin thing. But nope, summer after summer he has repeatedly gotten rashes from sun screen. I have tried natural one's from the biggest chain health store to no avail. The sunscreens either didn't work, and he would FRY or they would give him a rash. It honestly became so frustrating. Hats and sun shirts are great, but what kid wants to constantly be held hostage to clothing in 100 degree weather? Ya, mine didn't either.
Thankfully I remembered a friend mentioning Beauty Counter, who sells a safe sunscreen. Beauty Counter is a company that has a mission to get safer products into all consumer's hands. Europe has banned over 1,400 chemicals in beauty products that are known to be harmful for humans. And the U.S.? Well, we've banned 30. Yes 30 chemicals have been banned from our cosmetics and beauty products, and that law hasn't changed since 1938. I think it's time for a change.
From their website.
"At Beautycounter, we’ve committed to a health and safety standard that goes well beyond what is legally required in the United States. Our “Never List” is made up of more than 1,500 questionable or harmful chemicals that we never use as ingredients in our products. This includes the over 1,400 chemicals banned or restricted in personal care products by the European Union, plus additional chemicals screened by Beautycounter and found to be of concern."
This is so huge for me! Recently, my own health scare had me re-evailuating my daily choices. Am I doing everything I can to protect myself and family from an overload of household and personal chemicals? Am I even aware of how many hundreds, if not thousands I am applying to my skin daily? Am I feeding my family the way I know will fuel life and energy? Am I aware? Am I aware? I kept hearing that little phrase run through my head. Am I aware that my daily decisions, those that I don't even think about will add up both for good or unfortunately, for bad in the long term? I want to be the type of woman and mother that is thoughtful and intentional about my decisions. I want to intentional on where I spend my money. There are a lot of things out of my control but one area I can control is where I am spending my hard earned cash.
Not only do I feel like I'm making the best choices for my family, I can rest assured that my hard earned money is going to a mission that I believe in. And the plus, plus side? My son is no longer suffering from hives and bumps all over his body and can run and be a kid at the pool without everyone wondering why he's all red. Bonus!
